It has been a huge year for Lachlan “Magoo” Goold this year. Not only have things really ramped up at Applewood Lane but there has been some very exciting projects Magoo has been a part of, making 2013 one of his biggest years to date!
Of course, working with The Jungle Giants on their debut album was a definite highlight. Magoo and the band bonded over their love of pop songs, music and gear and the album has been a massive success for the band. Currently finishing off their album launch tour (in which they sold out almost every show), The Jungle Giants “Learn To Exist” was Triple J Feature Album and debuted at No. 12 in the charts and they are headed to SXSW next year! Knock ‘em dead Jungle Giants!
Magoo is at this very moment, finishing up mixing for the next album from Melbourne 9-piece soul band, Saskwatch. The record is so far sounding amazing and we look forward to its release.
In May Tasmanian band, The Middle Names, recorded their upcoming debut album, due out in 2014. The album is a real stunner and can’t wait to see what they do next year. To build on the success they had this year after playing Big Sound, touring round the country and just being announced to play on Falls Festival this year!
My Fiction completed their second record over a series of sessions throughout 2013 with both Magoo and his former Blackbox partner, Jeff Lovejoy. Great bunch of songs from a great band and we can’t wait to see where this next album goes for them.
Local act Jakarta Criers also took the trek out to Applewood to record a few new songs, following up from their Triple J hit, “Peking”. The new as-yet unheard tracks are slated for an upcoming EP which should be out next year. Expect big things from this Brisbane outfit in the future.
From doing some work at a conference in Canberra, Magoo got the chance to work with Elisha Bones, a 5-piece indie rock group from our nation’s capital. Their new songs sound amazing and the band has this year won a MAMA award (the MusicACT Music Awards).
Magoo also judged and participated in the City Sounds competition where local bands put themselves forward to record with Magoo. Little Odessa was selected and Magoo spent time with them over a week. The resulting tracks are fantastic with “All Night” being added to high rotation on Triple J just last week.
As well as appearing at Big Sound Music & Design talking about Applewood Lane studios and the “Meet The Producers” segment of regular Big Sound, Magoo also mixed a track for Astrid & The Asteroids, tracked the Hey Geronimo EP, produced and mixed the Dom Miller EP (who has just come off the road with John Butler Trio), helped make the Bandito Folk EP, mixed the Witch Doctor EP and did some more tracking and mixing work for The Oyster Murders. Phew! What a year!
Looking towards 2014, Magoo will be running a 4-day workshop and of recording and mixing some more excellent artists and as a Christmas/New Year present, we’re offering drastically discounted rates on mixing. If you have any projects that need mixing, please contact Magoo’s manager, Dominic Miller at dominic@bluebeardmusic.com.au
